As the days grow shorter and the air turns crisp, the allure of the changing seasons captivates me. Autumn and winter, with their unique charm, encourage us to slow down and savor the warmth of our homes and the comfort of loved ones. During this season, I am wholeheartedly choosing to embrace hygge—a Danish concept that celebrates coziness and contentment. In this post, I will share insights on discovering joy in the darker months, recognizing this season as part of God’s divine plan, and offering practical tips to cultivate peace and comfort during this time.
Understanding Hygge
Hygge (pronounced "hoo-gah") goes beyond being just a trend; it embodies a lifestyle that encourages us to relish simple pleasures. It involves creating a warm atmosphere, enjoying good company, and indulging in the little things that bring joy. For example, a cozy evening can be transformed by lighting a few candles, making a cup of hot chocolate, and curling up with a good book. As the weather turns cooler, embracing hygge helps me appreciate the beauty around me while acknowledging the longer nights ahead.
The Beauty of God’s Seasons
As a Christian, I believe every season has its purpose in God’s grand design. The transitions remind us of His plan and the cycles of life. Spring brings growth, summer offers warmth, and autumn and winter invite rest and reflection. The darker months might feel daunting, but they also serve as opportunities for renewal and preparation for the blessings yet to come.
Creating a Cozy Atmosphere
One of the best ways to embrace hygge is by creating a cozy atmosphere in your home. Here are some ideas I love to incorporate:
Warm Lighting: I choose soft alternatives to harsh overhead lighting. For instance, I often use string fairy lights or candles. Have youu tried crackle candles? They add a touch of fireplace crackle to the atmosphere. I love this Woodwick Fireside Scented Candle with Crackle Wick.
Comfortable Textiles: Layering soft blankets, plush pillows, and warm rugs enhances the comfort level in any room. As well as cosy to the eyes, the blankets double up to keep things warm as the evening draws in.
Seasonal Decor: Adding seasonal elements like pumpkins, pinecones, and evergreen branches can bring nature inside. I love to decorate my living room with a mix of autumn colors and scents that make my home feel seasonally festive.

Embracing Togetherness
Hygge emphasizes the importance of connection. During the darker months, I try to prioritize quality time with family and friends. Here are some wonderful ways to foster togetherness:
Game Nights: Hosting a game night allows us to gather, share laughter, and create lasting memories. For example, spike the competitive spirit with fun board games like “Codenames” or classic favorites like “Scrabble.”
Cooking Together: Preparing meals with your children or with friends can be a wonderful bonding experience. It is also a great opportunity to teach children some delicious ways to cook seasonal produce. A slow cooker is a must in our home and makes evenings easy with the night's meal slowly cooking all day, filling the house with delicious scents. (Also great for overnight oats too for an easy hot breakfast.)
Movie Marathons: There is something special about curling up on the couch with loved ones to watch our favorite films. I like to create an inviting movie night atmosphere with blankets, popcorn, and hot cocoa, making it a special treat to enjoy classic holiday favorites.
Finding Solitude in the Darkness
While connection is significant, solitude during this season is equally valuable. The darker months can be a sacred time for introspection and spiritual growth. Here are three practices I find helpful:
Quiet Time: In the midst of busy motherhood, setting aside time for quiet reflection and prayer helps to center my thoughts and connect with God.
Bible Studies & Journaling: As the evenings draw in earlier, I like to curl up with a blanket and really dig into the Word. The Flourish Bible Study Series by Lynn Brownback are a beautiful series to choose from. If you enjoy journalling, these beautifully illustrated Illuminated Bible, Art Journalling Edition is wonderful way to find focus in the Word, and a delight just to look at.
Nature Walks: In the cooler seasons, it can be all too easy to hibernate. Even in colder months, I like to get out into nature at least once a day. A brisk walk in the invigorating air is refreshing, and home feels all the cosier to come back to. To make it fun for the kids, why not try a scavenger hunt? These handy little cards are great for keeping in your pocket.
Bible Verses for Comfort
In the darker seasons, turn to Scripture for solace. Here are a few verses that bring comfort:
Psalm 139:11-12: “If I say, ‘Surely the darkness will hide me and the light become night around me,’ even the darkness will not be dark to you; the night will shine like the day, for darkness is as light to you.”
Isaiah 40:31: “But those who hope in the Lord will renew their strength. They will soar on wings like eagles; they will run and not grow weary, they will walk and not be faint.”
Matthew 11:28: “Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest.”
These verses remind me that even in the darkest times, God is with us, offering comfort and strength.
Practical Tips for Embracing the Season
To fully embrace hygge and the beauty of the darker months, here are valuable tips:
Establish a Routine: Creating a daily routine provides comfort and structure. I like to include time for some outdoor time, family activities, and time with the Lord.
Limit Screen Time: Reducing screen time helps the whole family to be more present. By spending less time on devices, we connect more deeply with one another, saving the screen times for more focused activities.
Engage in Creative Activities: Participating in creative activities like crafting, painting, or baking allows for self-expression and joy during this season. After a busy summer season, my kids and I enjoy spending time together getting a little bit crafty.
Practice Gratitude: I make it a point to reflect on things I am grateful for each day. This practice keeps my focus on the positives, even when the days appear darker.

Embracing the Season’s Gifts
As we welcome these cooler, darker months, let’s recognize this season as a divine gift—a chance for rest, reflection, and connection. By weaving hygge into our lives, we can find comfort in darkness and create a warm, inviting atmosphere for ourselves and our loved ones. Let’s treasure the beauty of every season, knowing we are never alone on this journey.
As we navigate through autumn and winter, let us hold onto the hope and light that come from our faith, assured that brighter days are ahead.
